Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry

The inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit at the AM Behavioral Hospital provides coordinated care for the unique needs of older adults in crisis to improve their quality of life and well-being. Patients typically stay up to 14 days under this program. The Facilities treat depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, psychosis including delusions and hallucinations, and Self-destructive or threatening behavior 

 

  • Geriatric psychiatrists with specialized training in the physical, social and emotional needs of older adults. 
  • Geriatric pharmacists with expertise in medications for the elderly.
  • Psychiatric social workers to provide resources for patients and caregivers to sustain the progress made in treatment.  

Acute Memory Care 

 AM Behavioral’s specialty trained staff knows that when older adults are suffering from the progressive stages of memory loss, they will need continued support and assistance. The staff also understand that each case is uniquely different and deserves the utmost attention and care. The AMC program offers 24 hours supervised care with meals, activities, and health management for residents. The activity program focuses on cognitive stimulation, safety recognition, and resident/staff awareness. The AMC unit is equipped with specially trained nurses and staff so that all residents can benefit from a personalized care plan to meet each one’s individual needs. The Patients typically receive 2 to 4 hours of therapeutic treatment and activities per day in AMC.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

These programs provide the most intensive level of non-residential, non-Inpatient care available. Care is designed for Patients who (1) have completed Inpatient or residential treatment and will benefit from the continued structure as they transition, or (2) have needs that do not rise to the level that requires the intensive nature of treatment in Inpatient and residential levels. 

 

  • Understanding the individual’s diagnosis 
  • Working through pain and loss 
  • Adjusting perceptions to achieve mental health 

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient treatment offers a structured setting that is less restrictive than partial hospitalization programs, Inpatient, or residential care programs. In an Intensive Outpatient Program, therapy sessions are typically 3 hours a day, 3 days per week. All Patients who engage in intensive Outpatient treatment receive individualized treatment plans that are tailored to meet their unique needs so that their treatment goals can be most appropriately met.

 

  • Medication management 
  • Individual therapy 
  • Group therapy 
  • Family therapy 

Residential (RES) Geriatric Mental and Behavioral

This program is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in older adults. These disorders include depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, late-life schizophrenia, and other disorders, often compounded with early stage cognitive decline. Geriatric psychiatrists and psychologists have specialized training in meeting the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients that allows for a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment. 

 

  • Family and individual therapy 
  • Coordination of care with other medical specialties 
  • Ongoing treatment and management for those with longstanding mental health issues 
  • Diagnosis and treatment for those with new or unresolved mental health issues
